Would a better Graphics card increase performance of my PC?

The computer is several years old, it can play games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 but it lags when the game screen gets busy and that is so annoying! Would a better Graphics card increase performance and if so which card should I get? I was thinking of getting one second hand as my PC is quite old.

Here are my specs :

Athlon 2400+

1024 MB Ram

80 GB Hard Disk

DVD Writer

ATI-RADEON 9600 SE (AGP Card)

A graphics card could increase preformance. But you have to realise that all the components are relying on each other. If for instance you have a very fast graphics card but a low speed CPU than it will bottleneck and just cause slowdowns, or vice versa. Your CPU seems a little old for pc gaming so you might want to invest in a better system.

It may help a little but being that it's a slightly older PC it may not make that much of a difference.

If you want to improve your gaming performance (because a better VGA is just to improve 3D and graphics performance.) you could buy a new video card.

But I don't think that your motherboard supports PCI-E bus. Your only choice is to buy an AGP8X card.

Yes, buying a better VGA improves your gaming performance.

First update direct X, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx...

then video card drivers,

if this doesn't work, then yes, get a new card.

Hi there,

Depends what do u understand from performance....the graphics card will definitely increase your performance, but visual performance. If you want to play games, then yeah you can put something like NVIDIA GEFORCE 7600+. But if you speak about performance in general, then I would recommend you to put at least 2GB of memory (RAM). And dont forget that if you are a heavy computer user (at least 4 hrs per day), it is highly recommended to do the System Scan Disk Utility and Disk Defragmenter at least once per week.....

It seems that Radeon 9600 Pro or 9800 SE would be around twice as fast as 9600 SE, and 9800 Pro more than 3 times faster (could be limited by your CPU speed). See UT2K3 Benchmark at:

The problem is finding one.
